Important Do’s During Amarnath Yatra
Keep yourself fit and healthy
Physical fitness is very essential for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. You should keep yourself fit if you want to undertake this yatra. You must go on morning and evening walks regularly. Try to jog for at least 30 minutes daily. Do prayanam exercises, breathing exercises, and Yoga every day. Do this at least one or two months before the Amarnath Yatra dates. Exercising regularly will increase your oxygen intake and will make your body more suitable for high-altitude treks like Amarnath Yatra.
Consider the age limit for Amarnath Yatra
You will have to undertake the Amarnath Yatra after considering the age factor. This is because the yatra takes place in high altitudes of 12,756 ft above sea level. At such a height, it gets very difficult to adjust the body to the low-oxygen air. The body also takes time to suit to the altitude so you might get altitude-related symptoms. So Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, who is the official organizer of this yatra advises everyone to consider their age when planning for this yatra. Children under 15 years and people above 75 years of age are not recommended to undertake this yatra. Women who are more than 6 months pregnant also cannot do this yatra.
Pack heavy clothes and essentials
Amarnath Yatra takes place in the monsoon time. While other parts of India receive heavy rainfall during this period, it snows heavily in high-altitude places such as Amarnath Cave. It also gets very cold here and sometimes, temperatures reach freezing point. So you are advised to take heavy woolen such as sweaters, mufflers, gloves, warm caps, jackets, and umbrellas. You must include other accessories like a torch, trekking shoes, raincoats, waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and moisturizer.
Wear proper clothing
You must wear appropriate clothing during the Amarnath Yatra. Women should not wear a saree as it will not allow them to freely use their hands or legs. Instead, they can wear salwar kameez, tops and jeans. Men can wear a pant and a shirt, t-shirts and jeans, tracksuit. Wear trekking shoes, and avoid wearing chappals, sandals, or slippers.
Take light snacks with you
You should take snacks that will give you energy during Amarnath Yatra. Also, keep yourself hydrated at all times. Dry fruits, energy bars, glucose biscuits, jaggery, dark chocolates, and nuts, are ideal for this yatra. You should keep these foods in a waterproof bag.
Never leave the group
You should stay with the group you are traveling with at all times. You should not leave the group or wander off to another place. And you should keep the group members in sight, whether you are walking in the front or rear.
Keep information about your group
You should gather information about your group and keep details of individuals traveling in the group. Or, you should be able to remember their names or faces. You should ask the police for help if you feel that some group members are missing and locate them based on your information. You should always leave the camp with your group members and keep them in sight.
Keep a first-aid kit handy
You should keep a first-aid kit with you so that it comes in handy when you or somebody else needs medical help. Though you will find medical facilities at base camps, the first-aid kit will be of immense help at places where medical facilities cannot reach on time.
Strictly follow the guidelines
You should always follow the guidelines laid down by the Amarnath authorities. These guidelines are made for the overall safety of the pilgrims so that they can be safe during the Amarnath Yatra.
