In which order should I do Char Dham Yatra?
Many tourists are confused and do not know which Dham they should visit first. This is also the problem that they face when planning their Char Dham Yatra itinerary. There are four pilgrimages in Uttarakhand that are collectively called Char Dham pilgrimage sites. These are Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. But over the years, pilgrims have discovered that they should follow a particular order of visiting these temples. In the following section, we will discuss the Char Dham Circuit.
Correct order of Char Dham Yatra
The order in which Char Dham Yatra takes place is Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. So, we can say that Char Dham Yatra begins in Yamunotri and ends in Badrinath. It is also written in the Hindu scriptures that pilgrimages start from the west and end in the eastern direction. If we look at the map of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is in the west and Badrinath is in the east. And between them are Gangotri and Kedarnath.
Char Dham Yatra sequence of visit
- Yamunotri is the first Dham that comes in this Char Dham Yatra. The motorable road is up to Janki Chatti, and then there is a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri.
- Gangotri is the second Dham that you should visit. It is 220 km from Yamunotri. As it is a very long drive, tourists make a night halt at Uttarkashi. There is no trekking involved to reach Gangotri.
- Kedarnath is the next stop of this Char Dham Yatra. There is a motorable road up to Gauri Kund and then an 18 km trek on foot up to Kedarnath Temple.
- Kedarnath to Badrinath is the last stage of this yatra. No trek on this route. There is a motorable road up to Badrinath.
Why is this order so popular?
- This yatra moves from west to east and in a particular geographical order. It is more convenient for the pilgrims and they can plan the yatra properly.
- The sequence of this yatra is spiritual and allows the pilgrims to get darshan of every god and goddess on the way.
- The sequence of these temples is laid down for generations and centuries. It has now become a tradition to start the Char Dham Yatra from Yamunotri and end it at Badrinath.
