Panch Prayag offers the confluence of five rivers in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The word ‘Prayag’ indicates the junction or meeting point of two or more rivers. The legendary belief behind the division of five streams is that when Ganga was descending, Lord Shiva divided it into five streams through His force and power.

Best Time to Visit Panch Prayag

The best time to visit Panch Prayag is from the month of March to June. During summers, the roads remain in good condition and the weather permits the travelling zeal as compared to the monsoon months.

How to Reach Panch Prayag?

The Panch Prayag Yatra starts from Rishikesh which connects well to Haridwar and Dehradun, the convenient rail route, and the air route, respectively.

Vishnuprayag

Vishnuprayag marks the confluence of the two holy rivers, Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. It is believe that Sage Narada meditated for Lord Vishnu’s appearance. The temple at the confluence of the river here is octagonal in shape. Though it was built to worship a Shiva Linga, now a Vishnu image is worship here. There is a stairway inside the temple which leads to the holy Vishnu Kund.

Nandprayag

The confluence of the Alaknanda which originates from Satopanth near, Badrinath Dham and Nandakini river which originates from the foothills of the Nanda Devi Peak. The holy place is after the historical king, King Nanda who perform yajna on a stone by the river. Nand temple is also locate here, which is believe to be built by King Nanda to seek blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Karnaprayag

Also known by the name of ‘The City of Karna of Mahabharata’, this holy place derives its name from the mythological belief of Karna’s penance to be blessed with the Kavach Kundala. The holy confluence of river Alaknanda and Pindari, connects the Kumaon region with the Garhwal region. The stone seat which holds the proof of Karna’s penance is also present here. Inside the temple, the idol of Uma Devi is worship to pay homage to Goddess Sati, who later took re-birth as Parvati.

Rudraprayag

The holy confluence of two rivers, Alaknanda and Mandakini, marks Rudraprayag. According to the legendary notion, Lord Shiva perform tandava nritya and played his Rudra Veena here. Thus, the name of the place is derived from the another name of Lord Shiva, i.e. Rudra. The idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Chamunda are worship in the temple nearby.

Devprayag

It holds the holy confluence of two rivers, Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. The place holds great religious importance too, due to the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The two Kunds or ponds locate here are Vasistha Kund and Brahma Kund and holds great mythological significance too. The region is also known as the seat of pundits due to its divinity and spiritual richness.
